Mindset: The Power and Impact Our Beliefs Have on Our Lives

Few of us have been spared adversity this past year — we’ve collectively endured a pandemic and reckoned with upheavals of norms and comforts we once enjoyed. Whether we faced these challenges head-on or avoided them depends on our mindsets. Mindset is what we feel and believe about our talents and capabilities and has a profound effect on how we lead our lives.

Coined and researched by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, there are two distinct mindsets we employ when faced with challenges: growth vs. fixed. The fixed mindset views challenges as obstacles to avoid, while the growth mindset embraces them as opportunities to learn. It turns out that the growth mindset is more valuable in challenging times, like a pandemic, and can lead to what’s known as post-traumatic growth.

In this PurposeCast, Heidi Grant, Ph.D., a former student of Carol Dweck, will help us understand these two mindsets, recognize them, and learn ways to shift our mindset towards growth. Heidi is a social psychologist, speaker, and author exploring topics like leadership, influence, and motivation. She is ranked among the top management thinkers globally and is passionate about helping people persist in the face of setbacks or challenges with a growth mindset.

Join Vic and Heidi as they discuss the importance of a growth mindset and how we can experience growth as we overcome adversity.

Key takeaways from this PurposeCast:
